The merits and demerits of phenolic resin used as a binder to produce refractory materials were introduced simply, and the synthesis mechanism of phenolic resin and the process parameter, which influencing the structure and performances of phenolic resin were also discussed. Besides, some methods about improving the properties of phenolic resin such as hydration resistance, heat resistance and carbon yield were summarized. In this paper, Ca2+-rectorite was converted to Na+-rectorite by a cation- exchange reaction to obtain organophilic rectorite. A modified resol type phenolic resin by organophilic rectorite was synthesized by means of in-stu intercalated polymerization method which used to prepare the polymer/layered silicate (PLS) nanocomposites so as to satisfy the need of binder for manufacture of new carbonaceous refractory materials. The properties of organophilic rectorite and modified resin were analyzed by means of XRD, FTIR, SEM and TG. The results indicated that the positive ion of quaternary ammonium salt was successfully exchanged with cation in the layer of rectorite, and organophilic rectorite was dispersed on a nanometer scale in phenolic resin. This good dispersion was beneficial to increase pyrolysis temperature and carbon yield of the modified resin. The physical properties of the magnesia-carbon refractories developed using the modified phenolic resin as a binder were improved.
