Chemical oxygen demand is an important indicator of the extent of water pollution, which occupies an important position in the analysis of wastewater. In this article, the COD standard solution was determined by using the potassium dichromate process and the potassium permanganate process, respectively. The accuracy and precision of testing methods were evaluated. For the same samples, the two methods gained very different results. It may be due to different experimental conditions and different oxidized ability of potassium dichromate with potassium permanganate. Thus, the analysis of a special water sample should select different method. Base on the above results from both methods, the work focused on the influence of different organic chemicals on the determination of COD. The results showed the potassium dichromate process was more suitable than the potassium permanganate process for the COD determination in waster water from the factory.Waste water processing and the recycle technology are important for protecting the environment and economizing reso(?)rces. An effective method of wastewater treatment was selected by determining COD, in which different waste water processing methods in the laboratory were tested. And the effect of the activated charcoal adsorption processing on the chemical oxygen demand and the removal efficiency of methanol was emphatically studied. The result indicated that, under the test condition, the activated charcoal to the waste water could decrease the COD by 90%. This work will provide some valuable aids to the design and improvement of the chemical wastewater treatment.
