Chelating resins is widely used in the fields of metallary, inorganic, waste water and marine chemistry, etc. Branched with rigid side units, Poly(ether) is harded and shaped, so that hard to flow. What is more, the high ordered aggregation structures of side chain liquid crystal of Poly(ether) can improve the adsorption properties of metal ions.4-hydroxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl was used in this paper as mesogenic side groups and reacted with Poly(ether). The resin was synthesized and discussed the affects of reactions. ~1H NMR was used to conform the structure, the branching degree of the mesogenic side groups on O-H units of Poly(ether) were also calculated from ~1H NMR. DSC analyses shows that the resin shows bitropic phase behavior but with less thermostability, because of the low substitution dgree of 62.5%. The liquid crystalline behavior and surface properties of the resins combined with non-ionic surfactant on the proportion of 0.5% to 4% were investgated. The results showed that, liquid crystallinity of the resin was affected by the combination with surfactant. Surface energy of the resin combined with surfactant was increasing gradually and then decreased. It had the lowest surface energy when the proportion was 1%. Hydrophile ability is increasing dramatically. The resin has the best hydrophilic ability on the proportion of 2%.The content of mesogenic units also affect the behavior of liquid crystals. The DSC and polarizing microscopy observed from the liquid crystalline indicate that the liquid crystal polymer has the schlieren texture, however the liquid crystal behavior disappeared and the melting point decreased after the combination. All polymerillustrate peaks at the 2θof about 20°0 in the X-ray diffraction which imply the exiting of crystal property. Combination conforms a special structure which shows several peaks at the 2θof about 20°in the X-ray diffraction and the liquid formation is changed a lot which possibly refers to the quantity of the surfactant. The adsorption properties for Hg(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), and Pb(Ⅱ)was investigated and their absorptive selectivity were studied. Results show that the resins have absorption for Hg(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), and Pb(Ⅱ) before combination. Absorption quantity to Co(Ⅱ)and Hg(Ⅱ) increased dramatically after the combination. Because hydrophilic behavior was improved after the combination so that the resin could react with the ionic better. Pb(Ⅱ) belongs to weak acid while the resin belongs to the strong alkali. Therefore definite improvement of Pb(Ⅱ)and absorptive selectivity was not observed after the combination.
