In the study of disaster science, ecological disasters are generalized as a group, but they haven't been summarized systematically according to their characteristics. In the research of risk science, study on the ecological risk mainly focuses on the damage of environmental pollutants to the ecosystem. In the field of disaster risk, much attention has been paid to the natural disaster risk, and the correlation theory is comparatively riper, while from the integrated point of view the risk assessment and management involved in various disasters of the area is not taken into account. This study presents theory, methodology for risk assessment and management countermeasures of ecological disasters in Jilin Province, China from the viewpoints of climatology, geography, hydrology, disaster science, and environmental science and so on. Based on the formation principle of the natural disaster risk and the ecological disaster risk, considering the natural and social features of Jilin Province, taking counties as basic assessment districts, the assessment model for ecological disasters which integrates hazard, exposure, vulnerability and emergency response and recovery capability contributed to the ecological disaster risk in Jilin Province, China is structured by using Natural Disaster Risk Index method, Weighted Comprehensive Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process. Each risk factor and the ecological risk are assessed and drawn by Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and the risk management countermeasures of ecological disasters in Jilin Province are proposed based on the above-mentioned research results. This paper gives a pilot study for the regional risk assessment and management countermeasures of ecological disasters taking Jilin Province as a case study. The result from this study provides scientific reference in decision making of the ecological disaster prevention and is potentially useful for rebuilding and resuming of the eco-environment in Jilin province.
