In this paper, acrylonitrile-EPDM-styrene (AES) graft copolymers w ere synthesized by emulsion polymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonit rile (AN) onto EPDM with disproportionated resin (EMS) and potassiumhydroxide (KOH) as emulsifier, and KSO (KPS) as initiator. The sta ble emulsion polymerization system was obtained by the research of theprocess of polymerization. The latex was qualitatively studied by the w ay of light scattering, electron microscopic projection, infrared spectrum, gel penetrate chromatogram. The influence of the polymerization conditions, such as concentratio n of initiator, emulsifier content, EPDM content, and reaction time on t he grafting degree and grafting efficiency were studied. The latex particl e diameter and its distributing were studied by light scattering. The resu Its show that it is a conventional emulsion polymerization process, and we got the proper reaction condition and recipe for producing AES: EP DM n-hexane solution 92g (9.87% solid percent),St 30g, AN 10g, EMS 5.28 g, KOH 2.64 g, KPS 0.32 g , HO 150 g , reaction time 10h, te mperature 65℃.The process of magnified experiment polymerization (in 10 litre) ba sed on the experiment in the lab was very stable and recurred very wel 1.Blending the product of magnified experiment and the SAN grains m ade the AES resin. The mechanics test results were: impact strength 128 J.m; tensile strength 38.6MPa; bend strength 61.5MPa; bend modulus 2 560MPa; gloss 84.2%; melt flow index 52.98 g/10min.The microstructure of latex particle and the rupture surface of AES resin were observed by transmission electronic microscope and scannin g electronic microscope. Compared the various ways of monomer added, we got a conclusion: when the process of the polymerization was as f ollow, the properties of the product were very good and the core-shell s tructure can be seen clearly. Firstly, EPDM solution was emulsified sing ly; secondly, evaporating the solvent in the emulsion; at last added the monomer and initiator one-off. The scanning electronic microscope result s showed that double screw blending was better than single screw blend ing.
