As raw material, the prepreg is important for the application and development of the automated fiber placement technology. Based on the automated fiber placement machine with seven degrees of freedom developed by NUAA, this paper studied the preparation methods of the prepreg and mainly discussed the following three aspects:(1) The preparation equipment of the prepreg with solution method was developed. Primarily investigated the process of preparing the prepreg, and got the appropriate parameters. Then properties of the prepreg was tested. Results showed that the prepreg could be manufactured by this method, but the improvement of preparation equipment should be given in the future, for some properties were still not stable in the tolerance of the required performance standards.(2) Two cutting methods of the prepreg by ultrasonic was presented, and the details of the operational means was introduced. Compared the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and finally the secondary ultrasonic cutting was chosen as the main blue print for designing the preparing system of the prepreg by hot melt dipping method. And then the details of the tension controlling system, online inspecting and correcting systems of the resin content was designed.(3) The applicability of NY9200G epoxy resin in the process of preparing the prepreg with hot melt method was studied. By testing the viscosity–temperature relations of the NY9200G epoxy resin, the appropriate temperatures for preparing the resin film and the resin impregnating fibers range was got. Prepreg was made with hot melt method and solution method respectively. Then the tension properties and the wet-heat resistance properties of the two kinds of laminates ware tested. The results showed that NY9200G epoxy resin is suitable for preparing the prepreg with hot melt method and the properties of laminate ware obviously improved.
