Geomorphical environment is the foundation and surface of a city, as well as theprecondition of the urban planning. Urban areas hold the most geomorphicalenvironment problems because of its positive economical and technical efforts.Geomorphical environment greatly restricts the development of the mountainous orhilly urban areas, and unreasonable geomorphical utilization easily causes geomorphicaldisasters. Chongqing, a mountainous city, enormously restricted by its usable areas andsloping topography, always experiences geomorphical disasters because of unreasonableland-use. In this paper, Chongqing Caijia group, a typical mountainous region isespecially researched for comprehensive evaluation of geomorphical environmentquality, on the purpose of promoting urban function, economizing land-use during thepractice of urbanization and urban construction and serving for the mountainous urbanplanning.Six major parts are included in this paper. The first part—a summary of geomorphical quality research, includes the historyand current condition of such researches, and research background, significance, contents, methods and techniques, etc.The second part—a general introduction of research region, generalizes its naturalcondition, social economy condition and its role in the metropolis circle of Chongqing. The third part covers an analysis of the distinctive factors of geomorphicalenvironment quality. Based on on-the-spot investigation and enormous lab experiments, the research techniques and directions on every factor of geomorphical environmentquality are precisely introduced. Then a space analysis about the factors is given. Andthe disparity and causes of geomorphical disasters in research region are speciallystressed. According to the need of urban planning, geomorphical factors are classified, followed by a diagram on special subject for database contribution to the followingresearches. The forth part shows the ways of comprehensive evaluation to geomorphicalenvironment quality bases on mountainous urban planning. Here comes the process ofevaluation: Firstly, the comprehensive evaluation quota and evaluation unit ofgeomorphical environment quality are chosen according to the geomorphicalenvironment characteristics of the research region. And by AHP, ensure the weight ofevaluating quotas and pick out the key factors to fix the quota system. Then, bycomposite index method, calculate geomorphical environment quality composite indexof each evaluating unit (the weight of each evaluating unit * the value of its grade). Atlast, classify each evaluating unit according to its quality index and make acomprehensive evaluation diagram of geomorphical environment quality in researchregion by GIS. After that, make an analysis and study on the whole geomorphicalenvironment quality as well as the space disparity regularity of its quality conditionfrom different aspects. The result of the evaluation indicates that the middle and easternareas, taking the proportion of 49.09% of the total size of the research region, mostlybelongs to the first grade, which can be used for urban planning and construction. Thesecond grade, with the proportion of 22.69%, mostly stretches around the researchregion. But the western part of the second grade happens to alternate with the thirdgrade land, which makes proper projects or protective measures are needed for land-use.The third grade land takes up 27.05%. The forth grade land, with the proportion of1.22% in total, is the area or potential area of geomorphical disasters, which certainlyshould be avoided for urban planning. The fifth part mainly analyzes the relationship between the mountainousgeomorphical environment and urban development. The countermeasures forsustainable development of the mountainous geomorphical environment are come uplater based on the necessity of the development of mountainous cities. The sixth part makes a conclusion and some existing problems are discussed, too.Researches of geomorphical environment are found inevitably in a particular place, soconclusions as the following are drawn under the evaluation: (1) geomorphicalenvironment quality is a complicated system consisted by many interacted factors. Eachgeomorphical environment should be matched distinctive factor during evaluation. It'sshould be stressed that the geomorphical condition makes restriction to urbanconstruction and the geomorphical disasters like landslides, dangerous rocks, debris flows, etc, impede the urban development. (2)The only way to make the evaluationresult practical used is to emphasize the purpose of evaluation. Take evaluation forgeomorphical environment quality of mountainous regions on the purpose of urbanplanning and naturally the evaluation result serves the urban planning at last. (3)Mountainous environment quality consists of the land surface foundation, geomorphicalcondition, and geomorphical disasters. These three aspects play important roles in bothurban planning and urban construction. It's known from AHP, geomorphical factors arethe most essential factors for comprehensive evaluation in mountainous regions.
