This paper studied on the comprehensive utilization technology of corn stalks. It includesmaking pulp from corn bast and cushioning packaging materials. The starting point of the study was to analyze the chemical composition of corn stalks, then NS-NQ, AS-AQ, AP-AQ pulping of corn bast and variation of non-fiber elementsmorphology during cooking were studied. This paper also tested and investigated the paperproperties of each pulp. The results showed that optimum alkali ratio was 0.4 for corn bastNS-AQ cooking. In addition to this, other pulping conditions in the laboratory were totalchemical 13%(as Na2O), maximum cooking temperature 160℃,cooking at 160℃for 105min,anthraquinone charge 0.1%, liquor to bast ratio 5:1.Under the conditions, the pulp from cornbast was obtained with screened yield 51.59%, Kappa number 8.1, limiting viscosity number1268mL/g,brightness of unbleached pulp 42.7%ISO,bleach requirement 1.7%.The AS-AQ pulp properties of corn bast reached the following that screened yield51.38%, Kappa number 10.8, limiting viscosity number 1264mL/g,brightness of unbleachedpulp 39.6%ISO,bleach requirement 2.4%when corn bast was treated under the optimumAS-AQ pulping conditions: total chemical 13%(as Na2O), alkali ratio 0.45, maximumcooking temperature 140℃,cooking at 140℃for 90min, anthraquinone charge 0.1%, liquor tobast ratio 5:1.The experiment results suggested that the optimum AP-AQ cooking conditions could betotal chemical 16%(as NaOH), maximum cooking temperature 135℃, cooking at 135℃for60min,anthraquinone charge 0.1%, liquor to bast ratio 5:1.AP-AQ pulp of corn bast wasproduced with screened yield 50.17%, Kappa number 14.6, limiting viscosity number1277mL/g, bleach requirement 6.2%,brightness of unbleached pulp 32.6%ISO.When comparing the characteristics of three kinds of pulp, the results showed that theAP-AQ pulp gave worse conditions in number for screened yield, brightness of unbleachedpulp.Meanwhile, bleach requirement of AP-AQ pulp was highest and beating characteristicwas worst. However, the strength of AP-AQ pulp was better than that of NS-AQ pulp andAS-AQ pulp, and non-fiber elements also were destroyed seriously. The research on preparation of cushioning packaging materials from corn pith andNS-AQ, AS-AQ waste liquor indicated that the dosage of adhesive, molding pressure, solidcontents of waste liquor, size of corn pith and the value of drying pressure had great effects oncushioning performance. The cushioning properties and rigidity of materials can be differentby changing these factors mentioned above. In this way, cushioning materials from corn pithinstead of EPS can be used for packing various kinds of industrial products.
