It makes industrial application of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane possible since Sourirajan and Loeb from university of California developed the first homogenous cellulose acetate (CA) membrane with an asymmetric structure in 1960. The application fields of RO technology is developed and expanded quickly, and RO applied in power industry is very popular in overseas. RO technology was introduced in power water treatment firstly in China since 1970s, and got more broad applications in power and chemical industries. However, the lower recovery for one pass RO system is a big trouble, which is a large waste in China with water shortage.The application status, effect factors and membrane fouling and control of reverse osmosis membrane technology are introduced in this paper. Based on the site operation data, water chemistry of RO(Reverse Osmosis) system in Cangzhou refinery, the three optimized proposals are suggested, which include: 1) the effective reuse process of the first pass RO concentrate; 2) maximum enhanced water usage through management, water economy consciousness of staffs and optimized operation; 3) considerations and attentive issues for surface water replacing groundwater because of the requirement of sustainable development.
