The paper has introduced property, carcinogenicity, origin and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), and the study status and the trace analysis method of PAHs were contained as well. The Huaihe River is one of the most important rivers in China. The distribution of pollutant in the river impact on the economic and biological development. The samples were collected from Huainan to Bangbu of the Huaihe river and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) were determined by GC-MS. Made use of these data, the distribution characteristics of PAHs in sediments and suspended solids along the riverside were studied. At the same time, 3 items of physicochemical properties of the sediments and suspended solids were analyzed, which are pH, temperature and conductance. In addition, the possible pollution sources of PAHs were discussed and their potential ecological risks were assessed. The research results showed as follows:1. The PAHs concentrations in sediments and suspended solids varied within a wide range and generally took on the trend from high in the middle reach to low in the lower reach along the riverside. On the other hand, from the angle of single component, three components which are phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene respectively were predominant while the others were relatively low.2. As a whole the tide of the PAHs gross in sediments and suspended solids was approximately same. The PAHs distribution in suspended solids obviously was affected by man-made pollution sources and water driving force conditions. PAHs concentrations in sediments were high near intensive resources and were low in the areas where water driving force conditions are strenuous.3. Composition of the PAHs in sediments and suspended solids was approximately similar. Both the varieties and aromatic rings distribution of PAHs and the ratios of phenanthrene to anthracene and fluoranthene to pyrene suggested PAHs in sediments was mainly derived from combustion and pyrolysis of fossil fuels in high temperature while that the great mass of places was mostly identified from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels in low and moderate temperature or diagenetic stage.4. Choose the especially sampling place to contrastly analyse the concentrations of PAHs in sediments, suspended solids and bottom dwell biology. The tide of the concentrations of Phenanthrene, Anthracene, Fluoranthene and Pyrene in sediments and suspended solids was approximately same. The concentration of Phenanthrene was tiptop, The concentrations of others were gradually descending. concentration of four PAHs in sediments was the most while in organism was the least.5. Bass on the risk assessment guideline values for PAHs,the quality numeric of PAHs from the huainan and bengbu sections were low to the effects range low(ERL). Compared with the corresponding ecological risk assessment guidelines, huainan and bangbu sections of Huaihe River will have low potential ecological risks.
