A glycidyl methacrylate(GMA)modified polyacrylate binder for pigment printing, which was synthesized by seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization, was applied to improve the handle and fastness of printed textile, and to provide a bargain product which is friendly to environment and brings good effect after pigment printing. This copolymer which contains functional epoxy group was a latex with core-shell structures of GMA-polyacrylate with polymer content 35wt%, average particle diameter around 95nm and narrow particle size distribution, the apparent viscosity is 8-10 mPa?s, glass transition temperature(Tg ) are -45.6℃and 58.2℃.To obtain the goal of emulsion providing good applied capability, The effects of polymerization temperature and polymerization time of constant temperature on polymerization process, and the influence of the proportion in soft and hard monomers, the conjugation and dosage of emulsifier and the dosage of initiator in polymerization process were studied. The effect of the dosage of GMA on some properties of this emulsion was also studied. The stability and rheological properties of latex were studied and characterized. The morphologic and structure of copolymer emulsion was qualitatively characterized and investigated by means of TEM, FT-IR, DSC. The influence of the applied condition of this modified emulsion used as pigment printing binder on its some applied properties were researched and analyzed. In the end, the comparison between this emulsion, which used as a pigment printing binder, and other binder products in performances of cotton fabrics printed have been estimated and analyzed. The results indicate that a steady latex with good applied properties can be obtained at the following conditions: the dosage of conjugated emulsifier accounts 5% all the monomers, the dosage of initiator is 0.5%, the ratio of soft and hard monomers is 3.5∶1(wt), the polymerization temperature is 75-80℃, polymerization time of constant temperature is 2h. A good performance of this GMA modified emulsion adjusted pH value in 7-8 by ammonia can be obtained when its dosage accounts 10% of printing paste, and at the following better printing conditions: print→pre-cure(75℃,3min)→cure(150℃,3min), and it can give the best dry rubbing fastness is 4-5, keep wet rubbing fastness above 3, and also give a softer handle and better color strength (expressed as K/S value) than non-modified emulsion. It has been found that the epoxy group had been succeeded introduced in the polyacrylate chain with the help of the titration of epoxy group and FTIR spectrum. The DSC curve of copolymer emulsion showed core/shell structure, and there are two glass transition temperatures showed different thermal history between core and shell. Through the comparison of applied properties it has been achieved the aim of modification of epoxy group of GMA.
