A new petroleum sulfonate (PS) is synthesized in single-tube film sulphonation reactor by the raw material of Suizhong low solidification point naphthene-base VGO and SO3 sulfonation agent. The PS is separated into four fractions with different average molecular weight by means of solvent extraction, and the average molecular weight is determined by biphase titration. It is found that the product possesses appropriate average molecular weight and broad molecular weight distribution. The molecular structure of fractions is characterized by 1H-NMR and element analysis, and it is discoverde that the molecular structure of these four fractions are remarkablely different, the fraction abstracted by water have some proportional double sulfonate, the other fractions are single sulfonate.The interfacial tension curves and the adsorption isotherms are also studied in order to investigate the relationship between interfacial chemistry property and molecular structure.The interfacial activity and the adsorptive property of the fractions are different significantly, and it is closely related to the different molecular structure of them.The interfacial tension curves, adsorption isotherms are also studied in order to investigate the relationship between interfacial chemistry property and molecular structure.Results showed that the fractions of extracting by benzene have the best low interfacial tension and adsorption; The fractions of extracting by water have the greatest interfacial tension and adsorption. It is almost have no difference in interfacial tension and adsorption between the fractions of extracting by chloroform and the remaining fractions of extracting by water. According to the principles of surfactants interfacial chemistry, it can be explained reasonably by the structure characters such as hydrocarbon chain length, degree of branching, aromaticity and the number of sulfonate group.
