Surface textures are influential to mechanical performance, especially to friction, wear, support, and lubrication of machining surface. Surface topography are closely related to processing methods and parameters, and its texture features have a large extent determines on the use of performance parts. The research on surface texture characterization and friction performance of grinding provide technique references to improve and control friction, wear, and lubrication of machining surfaces. Some well-regulated textures (such as 0, 30, 45 angle) were grinded on the surfaces of common steels (such as 20, 45, 40Cr) which was widely used in machine. Surface textures were measured by JB-2C roughness tester. In this article, the relationship of surface textures and roughness parameters was analyzed, the value of surface parameter arithmetic mean R_a, root-mean-square roughness R_q and gradient root-mean-square value Z_q were used to appreciate the surface topography. The results show that surface textures are relating to grinding parameters, and have an influence on surface roughness parameters. In the paper, friction performances of grinding surface were studied, which were measured by the HIT-1 friction tester. The effects of load force and speed on friction were studied. It is gained that friction factor decreases with the growth of load force, and increases with the growth of speed. The effects on the surface friction of grinding were analyzed by vary textures, different technics parameters, materials. The relativities of the friction performances and surface textures were studied. Experiments proved that the minimum wear is not the most smooth surface obtained in the course, but at the right of access under the conditions of roughness. In addition, the direction of the surface texture processing (mainly referring to the direction of processing traces) on the friction also have an important impact. The results show that the best friction resistance appears on the texture vertical to direction of movements, and the least friction resistance appears on the texture incline to direction of movements with certain angle.
