Railway solid waste is refered to the solid waste produced in the operational procedure of railroads. Nowdays, its amount has been increasing so rapidly along with the development of the railroads that it has become a very practical and serious problem which is affecting the sustainable railroading.Refused derived fuel (RDF) has been developed as an alternative energy and it is being developed to the industrial application. But this technology development is still in starting stage and there hasn't any related researches about its application in railway solid waste in China. Therefore, combustion characteristics and RDF pollutants emission of the railway solid waste, etc. should be further researched and explored.In order to achieve the reduction, recycle and safe treatment applied in the railway solid waste treatment, a certain amount of works have been done in this study. Based on the achievements of the RDF technology at home and abroad, combustion characteristic and dynamics of the waste and its mixture with coal have been studied by means of thermogravimetry. The emission characters of the pollutants (such as CO, NOx, SO2, HCl) from RDF have been summarized. Pollutants mechanism as well as the corresponding control has also been investigated.The final results indicate that: the composition of railway solid waste is simplier than municipal solid waste and the former has higher calorific value; ignition point and activation energy of the coal blended with the waste are obviously lower than the coal itself; pollutants emission concentrations from RDF combustion are lower than that from waste or coal combustion; the corrosion brought by HCl can be lessened by adding calcium sorbents through the preprocessing.The conclusions above can be used as a reference for the furnace design and combustion operation. And this study has laid the foundation for effective application of the railway garbage.
