In the process of machining, many factors, such as the energy wastage of driving, friction of movement parts, cutting of material and periphery environment, cause machine tools thermal deformation. The thermal deformation of machine tools influences the precision and errors of work piece.Modeling for thermal deformation of the machine tool's parts can offer technical auspice for analyzing thermal deformation and thermal error compensation. The slide guide and ball screw are the important parts of CNC. The slide guide acts as support and guiding, and the ball screw acts as nice transmission and orientation. Their thermal deformation will influence cutting precision.In this paper, a finite-element model is presented for analyzing the temperature and thermal deformation of the slide guide and ball screw. The slide guide and ball screw's temperature and thermal deformation in different work status were estimated by the FE model. And the time of reaching steady-state was estimate. The factor of affecting thermal deformation was analyzed. Through the FE modeling analysis, we can know the thermal characteristic. This is the basis of structure design of the feed drive system. It is also the basis of the trend analysis and surveillance of machine tool's performance retrogress, and it can afford reference for thermal deformation compensation.Thermal elasticity phenomenon is also discussed, and the research of thermal elasticity phenomenon influencing the thermal trait of the CNC feed drive system was made. The thermal elasticity phenomenon of the CNC feed drive system was analyzed. According to the result of analysis, it's helpful to improve the precision and robust of machine tools synthesis thermal error compensation model for considering the thermal elasticity phenomenon of metal.At last, the main conclusions and prospects for the future research are present.
