Magnesium alloys, as the lightest commercial structural material at present, have many advantages, such as high specific strength, high specific rigidity and good casting capability. Consequently, Mg alloys have been widely used in auto, aviation, computing, 3C goods and hand-tooling industries. With the rapid development of automobile, communication and aviation industries in China, the die-casting of magnesium alloys becomes more and more important. The die-casting machine of magnesium, as the key equipment for die-casting production, has to be accompanies by a continuous melting and metered pouring furnace. Consequently, the furnace becomes the key part of magnesium die-casting unit. However, China possesses no commercial technology and equipment of Mg melting and dosing furnace for cold chamber die-casting of Mg alloys. The formation of Mg die-casting capability mainly relies on import furnaces of electric heating. This situation is obviously adverse to the cost competitiveness and the cheap natural gas supply in China. Obviously, to tackle the gas-burning melting problem for Mg alloys to develop a new technique and equipment of natural-gas burning furnace for Mg cold chamber die-casting is of importance to improve the international competitiveness of china's magnesium-die casting industry and to promote the technical progress of Chinese Mg casting industry. To achieve such a goal, this study starts with theory of the gas combustion, then studies the theory of burn hydrodynamics, heat balance of furnace, and the numerical simulation of gas-phase combustion. The study gives a great attention to analysis of gaseous combustion process via three-dimensional numerical simulation of the burning in a melting furnace for magnesium die-casting, and to the technology of safety insurance. In conclusion, a new gas-burning technique and equipment for a dosing furnace of cold-chamber die-casting was developed with precision control of melt temperature and operation safety. The industry use made it evident that the technique and equipment developed have obvious advantages in the light of cost and performance.
