Batch distillation is a unit operation widely used for the separation and purification of fine chemicals. The optimization of batch distillation and the development of the new types of batch distillation columns are important issues. The optimization of batch distillation process with slop cut recycle is resolved in this paper. Batch distillation with a middle vessel and side withdrawal is developed and its operation characteristics are also investigated.The improved adaptive simulated annealing algorithm is adopted to resolve the optimization model of ternary batch distillation with slop cut recycle, and the optimal operation condition with the different control variables and different objective function are obtained. The optimization results are compared to those in literature, and the optimization results are all better than those in literature. In addition, the effects of different variables and different objective function to the optimization of batch distillation process are studied. The optimal operation characteristics of batch distillation with slop cut recycle are obtained.Batch distillation with a middle vessel and side withdrawal is developed in this paper. The constant molar hold-up model of batch distillation with a middle vessel and side withdrawal is established and solved by two-point implicit method. The batch distillation process with a middle vessel and side withdrawal is compared to the traditional batch distillation with a middle vessel by simulation. The batch distillation process with a middle vessel and side withdrawal can save distillation time and has high capacity factor. Furthermore, the top reflux ratio, the side reflux ratio, the side withdrawal position and the reboiler ratio for batch distillation with a middle vessel and side withdrawal are studied.The experiment for the separation of methanol- ethanol- propanol- butanol in a batch distillation column with a middle vessel and side withdrawal is carried out and compared with the results of simulation. The results show that the simulation results agree well with those of experiments.
