The method of combining numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and experimental research is adopted. The separation property of deoiling helical coil separator and the oil-water flow inside the separator are studied. The dimensional parameters of the separator are optimized by using numerical simulation method, which played a guiding role for experimental study, and, the experimental study further proved the correctness of model choice. The method of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) is adopted by using the Fluent software. RNG k-εturbulence model was selected. Numerical simulation for non-holed helical pipes was first carried out. Effect of inlet flowrate, gyration radius, and pitch etc. on separation property and pressure drop was analyzed. By observing on the oil distribution inside non-holed helical pipes, holes were opened in the location that aggregating large amount of oil. Oil sprays out of the helical pipe through the holes, which shows the separator has a good separation effect. Velocity curves and velocity vector distribution obtained from the experiments unveiled the internal flow field. The helical coil separator has a remarkable effect for treating oily water, which is revealed by the experimental study. The feasibility of numerical simulation for optimizing design is also approved. Effect of flowrate and gyration radius on separation efficiency is researched. This work provides a theoretical basis and references for further research of the separation mechanism, separation characteristic and structural optimization design of the helical coil separator.
