Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a new class of porous materials constructed from transition metal ions and bridging organic ligands. MOFs have potential applications in separation, catalysis, nonlinear optics, and storage of gases.A mixtrue of tetrachloroterephthalate acid and alcohol were refluxed, and then thionyl chloride was added dropwise. Tetrachloroterephthalate ester was obtained with yield: 90.53 %. With tetrachloroterephthalate acid as ligand, or tetrachloroterephthalate ester as the precursor, Zn(BDC-Cl4)(C5H5N)3(1), Cu(BDC-Cl4)(C5H5N)3(2) were gained by solvothermal method. They were characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, elemental analyse, FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis. It reveals that there is similar structure units between Zn(BDC-Cl4)(C5H5N)3(1) and Cu(BDC-Cl4)(C5H5N)3(2). In the basal structure unit of coordination polymer, both of them have a five-coordination geometry with two monodentate tetrachloroterephthalate ligands and three pyridine molecules coordinated to the Zn(II) or Cu(II) ion center. The monodentate tetrachloroterephthalate bridge the adjacent Zn(II) or Cu(II) centers to lead to zig-zag chains. The result of thermogravimetric analysis suggests that both complexes are stable.With 5-amino-benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate as raw material, dimethyl 5-iodobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate was obtained through diazotization and the reaction with potassium iodide. 3,3',5,5'-Tetrakis(methoxycarbonyl)biphenyl was gained by further Ullmann reaction. The target compound, biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid, was achieved by acidification with total yield up to 16.84 %. The research work in synthesization biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid as ligand was further goning on by solvent diffusion and solvothermal method.In conclusion, our research work was focused on the complex with the aromatic carboxylate as ligand. The results would be in favor of our further work.
