According to investigation and research about the current actuality of surface heat treatment processes, the new technique, named "friction heat treatment", is putted forward, which is more energy conservative, environmentally friendly, and efficient than traditional heat treatment processes. This thesis is to study the basic theories of the tribology and heat transfer about the friction heat treatment technique. The physical and mathematical models about friction heat treatment are established, by describing the heat transfer process of the friction heat treatment. According to the theoretical study and the actual conditions, a testing scheme of friction heat treatment about the alloy steel is developed, and the test of the work pieces were carried out by friction heat treatment machine which was specially designed. The hardnesses of the workpieces after friction heat treatment testing were measured by Rockwell hardness tester, and the photos of the microstructures of workpieces were taken by scanning electron microscope, namely SEM. The analysis about the mechanical properties and microstructures of workpieces were carried out. The slope distribution of temperature of samples, when it was rubbed by the counter part, was simulated by using the ANSYS.The result of the testing and analysis show that, the workpiece meets the actual requirements after friction heat treatment. The friction heat treatment technique has good prospects in practical applications.
