As the aggravating of organic pollution in water, it has always been the focus and difficult problems in research for the removal of organic pollutants effectively. Altough activated carbon have a widely used to remove organic pollutants, the adsorption rate is very low. Therefore, it has been an important issue that how to improve the adsorption efficiency of activated carbon, and reduce it's dosage validly. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon was depended on it's surface property. It could change their surface structure and enhance its adsorption capacity of activated carbon to some extent by modification. In this paper, take the phenol as the typical organic matter, and rearching the promoting role of potassium permanganate modification on activated carbon to remove organic pollutants by static adsorption experiments. The experimental results show that the absorption capacity of activated carbon modified with potassium permanganate was improved significantly, and its removal rate increased by 20%. The absorption capacity of activated carbon modified with potassium permanganate was greatly changed, but the adsorption properties of activated carbon was changed little. The result show that, like the ordinary activated carbon, the adsorption efficiency was affected by adsorption time, temperature, amount of granular activated carbon, the initial concentration of phenol wastewater, pH value and other factors, and the influence pattern was similar with the ordinary activated carbon. However, the adsorption capacity of activated carbon was increased significantly after modified by potassium permanganate, the dosage was reduced significantly to achieve the same adsorption capacity, and the economic costs was decreased shaply. The role of potassium permanganate and activated carbon was affected by both dosage and reaction time, In the study, removal efficiency of activated carbon for organic pollutants was raised with the dosage of potassium permanganate increased, the removal rate could reach to a peak when the dosage of potassium permanganate to a certain extent, and thereafter the removal rate of phenol was reduced conversely with the dosage of potassium permanganate increased. In the same circumstances, the removal rate of activated carbon for organic pollutants was raised with the increase of reaction time between potassium permanganate and activated carbon, but the role would be slow relatively after the reaction time reached 90min.And the study show that the adsorption process was more accord with Langmuir adsorption isotherm parameters model then Freundlich model through compared.
