In this paper, the status and trends studies of the furniture mechanical structure in domestic and foreign have been summarized and discussed, and the related research on the testing method of mechanical properties of modern redwood furniture has been made. The above studies provided the conclusion that the finite element method and the corresponding analysis software ANSYS can be applied to the establishment of the non-destructive testing and design methods of the modern redwood furniture mechanical structure. As the reason that the structures of chair and stool redwood furniture are more complicated, the discussions in the paper based on such furniture, and the conclusions will have some meaning to other furniture. As the early foundation of the ANSYS application, the paper gets start from the required material properties, external loads, loads sizes, constraints, and modeling. The studies as follows:(1) the testing of elastic constants of wood materials; (2) the determination of the external loads; (3) the simplification of the components of the modern redwood furniture and the classification of common chairs and stools.Among all the studies, the elastic constants measured by electrical strain gages and three-point bending experiment; the external loads were mainly determined by the national standards, ANASYS software, ergonomics and other related researches; components simplification adopted the Pro/MECANICA in Pro/E; and the classification of the furniture was based on the material mechanics and furniture mechanics.The results from the electrical strain gages experiment can meet these relationships between the elastic constants of the anisotropic materials, and the variation coefficients are less than 20%. Based on the results of shear modulus GLt, GLR, a high linear correlation coefficient (>0.974) between the reciprocal of elastic modulus MOE-1 and the square of the depth to length ratio (h/1) 2 shows the obtained shear modulus values reliable by three-point bending experiment.From the impact loads and static loads aspects, the loading points, loading manners and constraints which meet the software ANSYS have been determined. In addition, the study has added the external loads on the cross doorpost and the external loads when the furniture are misused in the special cases.The modern redwood furniture'components are simplified by the Pro/MECANICA software and by the way of extraction the main geometries from the original model. By the comparative stress analysis study of the original model and simplified model, we can make a result that a simplified approach like this is feasible, but still need to make specific research on the specific structure. In accordance with the principles of material mechanics, the force of the various components as well as the related impacts on the frameworks can be studied. And by the corresponding simplified methods, the classification of the parts formed by the components also can be made. On the basis of the above studies and on the reference of Ming furniture, the classification of the common types of chairs and stools can be determined. Of course, there is some faultiness in the classification; these problems will be solute by the further research on furniture and the practical application of the finite element.
