The basic theory and the research status quo of a new hydrogel was studied. A new hydrogel with polyethylene oxide (PEO)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan which has bacteriostatic nature was made. It was found that chitosan molecular weight, total solids concentration and different doses of y-irradiation have effects on the properties of hydrogel. Experimental results showed that:1. The gel fraction of PEO/PVA/chitosan blend hydrogel was gradually increased when the radiation dose increased. The higher the concentration of mixed solution, the gel fraction would be reduced; the gel fraction was reduced by increasing addition of chitosan.2. When the radiation dose increased, the swelling ratio gradually reduced. The higher the concentration of mixed solution, the swelling ratio definitely increased. The increment of chitosan addition in quantity could increase the rate of hydrogel swelling, and large molecular weight of chitosan could also enhance its swelling rate. The introduction of chitosan led the swelling rate of hydrogel to have a pH-sensitivity, the higher the pH value, the lower the swelling rate was. The swelling ratio of hydrogel decreased significantly with the increasing of ionic strength.3. The best mechanical properties of hydrogel film was obtained under 21kGy irradiation dose. With the chitosan content increasing, the mechanical performance decreased. The less water content of hydrogel film, the better mechanical properties was. The best preparation process was obtained when the total solids content was 15%, and the radiation dose was 21kGy.4. The anti-crobial property of mixing gel was indirectly tested by medium turbidity measurements using UV spectrophotometer method. The results showed that, due to radiation hydrogels prepared by maintaining the amino functional group of chitosan, therefore, it had good inhibitory effect on both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. And the higher the content of chitosan, the better the antimicrobial properties were.5. Gentamicin sulfate in the hydrogel has a good sustained-release effect. In the treatment of early stage, drug can quickly reach the rapeutic concentrations in the local wound and can effectively control wound infection; and then it can effectively kill proliferated bacteria by slowly release. The hydrogel film had excellent water absorption and good mechanical properties, which is very promising to be applied to clinical treatment as a new type of medical dressing.
