The development and application of coating additives is the major driving force to speed up the improvement of coating quality and new product innovations. With local additive market booming in recent years, more and more international companies are engaged with coating firms to promote their products and technology into China market, at the same time local additive manufacturers are trying to catch up and benefit from this market. As the people's environmental protection consciousness enhanced and related regulations tighten, the development of environmentally friendly coatings is moving very fast including water-based coatings, UV curable coatings and powder coatings, and that expedite additive evolution and application especially in silicone and fluorocarbon additives.Three types of water-based polymeric dispersants were introduced in this thesis with typical comb polymer of pigment-affinic groups and water compatible chains. Systemic experiments were approached to evaluate pigment dispersibility by using these additives, in terms of viscosity, flow property, particle distribution and stability.Strong cohesive adsorption between polymeric dispersant and pigment particles was detected with dispersant water compatible chains extend from the pigment surface into surrounding water solution, thereby providing steric stablilty. As a result good dispersibility on organic pigment and carbon black was observed in resin-free pigment dispersions.Prepared pigment dispersions were also tested in water-based inks and coatings to verify their flow performance, color strength, color development and gloss. Different compatibility by mixing dispersions with water-based inks and coatings were appeared in these parts of study. SMA-based dispersions are suitable in aqueous inks instead of coatings, PY13 azo yellow pigment dispersion made by Styrene/Ac and most of dispersions by Polyamine dispersant show good performance in both inks and coatings system.
