Pharmaceutical industry is one of the important national industries in China, but their impact on environmental pollution has become increasingly prominent as the hot and difficult problem on industrial pollution control. Therefore, in order to achieve the desired control effect, we need to develop an economic and efficient wastewater treatment process.The study treated chemically synthesized pharmaceutical wastewater with hybrid biological reactor, and emphasized on the study of starting and running process to optimize the operation parameters. At the same time, the actual running effect of the reactor under optimum conditions as well as the stability of technology was studied.For the hybrid biological reactor starting tests, the results showed that after four treating processes, such as inoculation of sludge, sludge culture, dynamic film culture and domesticating of sludge and bio-film simultaneously, the removal of COD in the reactor is about 60% and the microbial show high activity and strong physiological adaptability. Domesticating of the bio-film on the packing media was the key stage of the reactor starting and it was mainly related with the concentration of suspended microorganisms and the characteristic of the packing media, environmental hydraulic factors.The optimal parameters of the reactor treating pharmaceutical wastewater were got by the running test. For example, the hydraulic retention time was 8h, the aeration flow was 0.36~0.40m3/h, the dissolved oxygen was 4~5mg/L, gas-water ratio was 30:1, the sludge returning ratio was 100%, the sludge concentration was 4.6~5.0g/L. In the processing, the main factors which will affect hybrid biological reactor are temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, hydraulic shear stress, the influent organic load, nutrients and some inhibitory substances.After investigating the running process under the best operation conditions of the reactor, it was found that when the influent COD concentration was less than 500mg/L, the effluent COD concentration could be reduced to 180mg/L by the reactor. When the influent COD concentration varied between 500mg/L and 1700mg/L, the rate of COD removal fluctuated between 60% and 74%. This showed that using hybrid biological reactor to deal with the pharmaceutical wastewater could achieve high running stability and better effluent quality. The treating effect of the chemically synthesized pharmaceutical wastewater of low concentration is satisfactory and the effluent quality can meet the requirements of "discharge standards of water pollutants for pharmaceutical industry chemical synthesis products category" (GB21904-2008).
