In this paper, an accurate analysis method for the trace Organic Pollutants, such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAH) and Organochlorine Pesticides(OCP) in river sediments was investigated systematically in order to improve the traditional techniques. The pretreatment of sediment samples was also discussed, and an accurate GC/MS method that simultaneously determinates 16 PAHs and 19 OCPs was set up.During the pretreatment, extraction of 16 PAHs and 19 OCPs was carried out by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE),and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) combined with solid-phase extraction was used to clean up the extraction. The optimum pretreatment conditions were obtained by optimizing the conditions of extraction and cleaning up.Average recoveries for 16 PAHs obtained by this pretreatment ranged from 81.7% to 101.7%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) for the recovery ranged from 0.4% to 4.5%.Average recoveries for 19 OCPs obtained by this pretreatment ranged from 70.6% to 108.4%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) for the recovery ranged from 1.0 to 4.5%.The conditions of GC/MS were developed for simultaneous determination of 16 PAHs and 19 OCPs in sediment samples.Under those conditions,16 PAHs and 19 OCPs could be well separated, and RSD of GC/MS was 0.16%-2.71%.The limits of detection for the methods of 16 PAHs and 19 OCPs reached at 0.16-0.59ng/g and 0.14-2.23ng/g respectively. It has shown that the precision of these two methods were high. The established pretreatment and analysis method were applied successfully to sediment samples for the determination of 16 PAHs and 19 OCPs.
