| As economic globalization sweeping the world since 1970's, the contradiction between environmental protection and economic development has become increasingly prominent, as a result, every country are more concerned about their environment protection and control. Maurice Strong, the former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General said that:global environmental issues have become the second largest international problems after economy. Environmental issues are affecting international economic, political and diplomatic decision-making gradually, therefore, international cooperation is of the most important way to solve global environmental problems.As is generally known, the functions of sovereign states, non-governmental environmental organizations and other global environmental governance are limited in the global environment issues, so multinational companies as non-state subjects actively become important participants in global environmental protection with strong capital and technical advantages. On the one hand, if multinational corporations try to maximize profits neglecting of environmental protection, their production and business activities all over the world will inevitably lead to deterioration of the global environment; On the other hand, if multinational companies engage in economic activities in an environmental friendly way,great environment contributions can be made based on their enormous financial resources and advanced technology, which can be beneficial to both the multinational corporations themselves and the sustainable development of the human society.This thesis is formed by three chapters with an progressive approach to the field of transnational corporations in global environmental protection.The introduction describes the meanings, research status, method, framework and main innovations.The first chapter makes an introduction of transnational corporations and environmental issues, and then describes the way that multinational corporations involved in global environmental protection, which concludes that international cooperation are necessary for global environmental governance and multinational corporations as non-governmental subjects also have made positive contributions to the field; Then make an analysis of intrinsic motivation and external factors of transnational corporations involved in environmental protection, which are the impetus of multinational companies to participate in, to provide the basis of behavior analysis for environmental protection acts carried out by British Petroleum.Case analysis is applied in the second chapter. By studying the environmental behavior of British Petroleum, the paper concludes behavior performance, characteristics and outcomes of transnational corporations in the field of global environment protection. This chapter first describes the behaviors of BP's participation in environmental performance in five areas:BP's implementation of environmental protection in the host countries, cooperate with non-governmental organizations to carry out environmental cooperation, BP's compliance and promotion with relevant standards, environmental protection in the process of production and its internal environmental protection; Secondly, this paper finds the fundamental and external purposes of BP's environmental protection; Again, the behavior characteristics of BP's participation is analyzed; Finally, the paper explore the behavior result of BP's participation in environmental protection.Combining the analysis of chapters one and two, the third chapter makes conclusions of the positive environmental impact on the global environment and problems exists in the process of multinational companies'environmental activities. The last part is the focus of this article, based on the available information and in-depth study and analysis, the author's point of view is presented.The focus of the third chapter is:through research and analysis, the inevitability of global environmental protection can be seen of all international subjects, indicating the increasingly severity of global environmental problems as well as the significance of multinational corporations involved in environment protection, but whether it can be an effective way for global environmental governance and board the "environmental diplomacy" stage as an international non-governmental worth further study of this paper.Finally, the paper aims to provide a summary on the analysis of transnational corporations in global environmental protection field. |
