The main subject of the research was to explore the proper method dealing with the refractory organic compounds in reverse osmosis (RO) brine produced from petrochemical waste water. There were three main parts in the research, including absorption of refractory organic compounds in petrochemical RO brine by activated carbon fiber (ACF); treatment of the refractory organic compounds in petrochemical RO brine by electrolytic catalysis oxidation method and treatment of the refractory organic compounds in petrochemical RO brine by UV/O3 united technique. In the third chapter, the basic absorption characteristic of the ACF was researched, including pretreatment of the ACF, determination of adsorption isotherm of ACF about the refractory organic compounds in the petrochemical RO brine, testing the time of adsorption equilibrium in petrochemical (RO) brine by ACF, exploration of the most optimized dosage of ACF and pH in the solution in order to dispose the pollutants at maximum. All the result of experiment showed that the effect of absorption in the petrochemical RO brine by ACF could not fulfill the demand for the water quality. In the fourth chapter, the treatment of petrochemical RO brine by electrolytic catalysis oxidation method was preliminary studied. The lab-scale experiment showed that stirring with the aeration would enhance the removal effect which could increase the dissolved oxygen in the solution. Using Ti/Sn-Sb wire meshes as positive plate had better treatment effect on target pollutants than that using the Ti/Sn-Sb positive plate because the wire meshes had larger surface area. Inserting the ACF into the positive plate could enhance current efficiency and afford enough space for chemical reaction in order to gain a good pollutant removal. Addition of the ferrous ion as the catalyzer would increase the likelihood of Fenton reaction in the acid condition. In the fifth chapter, the treatment of the petrochemical RO brine by UV/O3 united technique was introduced and a reactor of the UV/O3 united technique was designed. The method of calculating the light intensity of the ultraviolet light lamp was established, which was demonstrated by an experiment. The experiment of treatment the petrochemical RO brine by the reactor of the UV/O3 united technique showed that effect of treatment of the petrochemical RO brine could not meet the requirement only by the UV/O3 united technique might be used for pretreatment of the petrochemical RO brine. The research showed that three methods mentioned above could not meet the requirement, which need the further exploration.
