Municipal solid waste is the inevitable result of urban activities. With the growing of generation quantities, the increasing complexity of waste composition, treatment limitations, and the impact of municipal solid waste (MSW) becomes a severe problem. The impact includes the occupation of land, seeping of the leachate made by waste random stacking into the groundwater therefore cased pollution of groundwater, and breeding flies so that posing a threat to human health, and more importantly, this will result in the waste of a large number of available resources. In the face of a series of serious problems caused by municipal solid waste, people began to realize the importance of the integrated management, which is the management from waste generation through transfer and transportation to final disposal. In the integrated solid waste management, waste collection and transportation system is one of the important components; however, by the lacking of theoretical guidance, waste collection and transportation systems is the weakest link in the whole system. Therefore, the improvement and optimization of waste collection and transportation of solid waste management plays a vital role in efficient operation.In this thesis, based on the analysis of all aspects of waste collection and transportation of MSW, the waste collection and transportation system optimization methods and mathematical model were proposed for the purpose of economy optimization, the research area of Dongcheng District (formerly called Chongwen District) was selected as the verifying example. The following conclusions are obtained:â‘ According to the analysis of waste collection data of Xiaowuji Transfer Station in February, May, July, October of 2009, the waste generation of the four seasons in Chongwen District were presented, which was the foundation for the establishment of waste collection and transportation model.â‘¡Through the analysis of waste collection point and distance, the distance between the waste collection point was got and the distance matrix was established. By the modern logistics distribution theory and graph theory, based on the MATLAB software platform, the model of Waste Collection and Transportation system was proposed. Then the model was tested by the improved ant colony algorithm. The result shows that the improved ant colony algorithm is effective. â‘¢The improved ant colony algorithm was applied in the example of this thesis. By comparing the improved algorithm with expert algorithm, Liuwei algorithm and the existing collection routes in Xiaowuji Transfer Station from the point of economic benefits, the results are showed: The total collection distance with the improved ant colony algorithm is 82.84km, 0.08% shorter than expert algorithm, 74% decreased than the exits condition. At the same time, the load of collection vehicle is increased from the actual 69.14t to 80.74t of the improved algorithm; the amount of waste transportation quantity is increased 16.78%. All the results demonstrate that the model and the corresponding improved ant colony algorithm in this thesis are feasible for the optimization problem of waste collection and transportation.
