In recent years, with the development of nanotechnology and tribology on a micro level a very vast prospect of nano materials has already been shown in tribology. Compared with traditional anti-wear additives, nano materials have small size effect, surface effect, etc. They can not only improve the tribology, but also are nontoxic to the environment. As a result, researching and developing nano additives which have good tribological property make sense. There are many ways to prepare nano-Cu powder. In this paper, the preparation of nano-Cu powder was studied by chemical reduction. And the optimal parameters were obtained through discussing the the pH value and the concentration ratio between EDTA and CuSO4·5H2O. Morphology and microstructure of the product were studied by way of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electronic microscopy(TEM). The results show that the product is nearly pure nano-Cu and its average grain size is 2.8nm.The tribological property of nano-Cu as additive in lubricating oil was investigated on a stock-on-ring testing machine. Friction coefficient and wear mass loss were discussed in order to study tribological property. And the worn surfaces were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy(SEM). The results show that the wear and friction properties of nano-Cu as lubricating oil additive are excellent. And when the adding quantity is 0.04% and 0.03%, the friction coefficient and wear mass loss are separately the best.Water-based lubricant used in experiments were mainly made from water, starch and NaOH. The tribological property of nano-Cu as additive in water-based lubricant was also studied on a stock-on-ring testing machine. Friction coefficient and wear mass loss were discussed in order to study tribological property. And the worn surfaces were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy(SEM). The results show that the wear and friction properties of nano-Cu as water-based lubricant additive are excellent. And when the adding quantity is 0.04‰, the friction coefficient and wear mass loss are the best.
