The armored face conveyor is the most important conveying equipment inunderground mecha nical mining system. As a vital sub-system within the armored faceconveyor, the sprocket transmission system is the most importa nt part of AFC transmissionsystem. The engagement issue between the sprocket and chain is key issue in the sprockettransmission system.The paper utilizes multi-body dynamics theory, based on the kinematics and dynamics,and analyzes the engagement and transmission process between the sprocket and chain withcomputer-aided simula tion analysis software, further studies the engagement characteristicsand rules . The paper aims at provid ing theory basis to optimize the design of sprockettransmission system. The paper mainly consists of following issues:(1)Analyzes the development and status of multi-system dynamic research whichadopted by the simula tion study of engagement between the sprocket and chain, modelconstruction and resolution of multi-system dynamics and some vital technologies likecontact issue between complica ted profiled surfaces.(2)Based on the analysis of working principle and mecha nical structure of sprockettransmission system, combined with requirement of simula tion analysis, the papersimplifies and constructs the genera l model of the sprocket transmission system andphysica l model. Meanwhile the paper studies the dispers ing of contact faces, topologystructure and parameter set-up of model.(3)Based on the actual requirement of performance analysis for sprocket transmissionsystem, the paper establishes the simula tion analysis resolution for engaging featuresbetween the sprocket and chain; builds up a dynamics analysis model. Utilizing the basic theory of multi-system dynamics and 3D design software Pro/E and multi-system dynamicsanalysis software SimPack, the paper makes dynamics and kinetics simula tion ofengagement process under various conditions ; studies the kinetics characteristics and rulesof engagement of sprocket and chain; gives curve of kinetics changes and cartoonpresentation of sprocket and chain, and also lays foundation for optimization of sprockettransmission system as a result.(4)According to the result of dynamics and kinetics simula tion, the paper raisesoptimized suggestion on pair match based on length measuring, pretension and inspectiondimension during chain usage and maintena nce.The research on this topic has important practical significa nce to improve thereliability and stability of sprocket transmission system, lower product operation accidentsand testing cost, promote R&D efficiency and design quality, as well as increase theeconomic benefits.
