In this paper, the properties of phenol degradation by microorganism under anaerobic conditions were studied, the effect of the toxicity of phenol on the structure of sludge particles were analyzed. PCR were used to identify the dominant genera of microorganism flora after evolution, the intermediates of phenol degradation were confirmed, the approach and mechanism of phenol degradation by anaerobic microorganism were determined finally. The results of the study show that, the phenol can be degraded by acclimated anaerobic microorganisms, the structure of sludge particles were expanded by the toxicity of phenol, so the pores of particle become large and the productions of the methane bacteria were inhibited. While these lead to accumulated gas production of 12 d was only 1.6ml during the degradation of phenol of different concentrations, and the Trichococcus sp.、Propionigenium sp.、Clostridium sp.、Citrobacter sp.、Bacteroidetes sp. become dominant genera after the evolution of flora. The dominant genera play an important role on the removal of phenol. The results of water sample analysis show that, the phenol was degraded into benzaldehyde under anaerobic conditions. The hydroxyl of phenol was transformed into aldehyde group by physiological and biochemical functions of microorganism and assimilated by microorganism. In addition, the single ring of phenol could be transformed into double loop, then the cyclic structures will become long chains and will be degraded after opened.
