For the characteristics such as interoperability and reusability, HLA (High Level Architecture) has become one of the hotspots in the development of simulation. Combat Simulation are widely used in drilling and military training, but the shortage of HLA in real-time embarrasses its further development.According to the architectures of HLA-based distributed combat simulation systems and requirements for real-time connecting, the real-time characteristic of federate and real-time synchronization between federates are very important in real-time connecting in distributed battle simulation systems. Technologies for real-time connecting in WAN are also much concerned issues for battle simulation in large scale.Firstly, the paper analyses the architectures and characteristics of distributed combat simulation systems. We indicate the most popular architecture used in WAN and the requirements for real-time connection.And then, in the real-time characteristic part of federate, we find that Windows cannot provide the satisfying real-time characteristic, which will partly influence the performance of RTI. Because of that, RTX, which is known as real-time subsystem for Windows, is introduced to improve RTI performance in real-time. As a result, the architecture of RTI is changed to adapt to RTX.Thirdly, in the part of real-time synchronization between federates, we discuss the algorithms for time synchronization in WAN and bring forward improved algorithm based on RTX. In addition, in order to reuse the current network hardware and realize the expansibility of distributed combat simulation systems, DDM (Data Distributed Management) in WAN is discussed and some methods for real-time connecting between heterogeneous federations are brought forward.In the end, based on theoretic research, the prototype real-time system for RTI based on RTX is proposed. The system had been used in a testing case. We also testify the methods of DDM for improving real-time characteristic based on heterogeneous federations in the way of improving KD-FBT in WAN.
