Electronic transformers have more advantages then electromagnetic transducer, such as small in size, large dynamic range, without ferromagnetic resonance, good insulation and so on. So it will be widely adopted in intelligent substation. In this paper, the merging unit is the device of connecting electronic transformer and the second equipment in intelligent substation. So researching the merging unit not only can simplify the second equipment but also can improve the accuracy and reliability of realizing the sharing of information within the substation and enhance system integration, it have great significance and application value.In this paper, the provisions of MU are analyzed firstly, which is based on IEC60044-7/8 and IEC61850-9-2 standards. And IEC61850-9-2 standards are choose to be the MU design basis, and analyses or research to merging unit's structural principle and function. Secondly, based on the comparison of several typical MU design schemes and function models, the hardware design scheme and software function of MU in bay is proposed in the scheme, MU is based on FPGA&MPC8313 structure, then the programmable, I/O port advantages of FPGA and the high-speed data processing ability of MPC8313 can be made full use of. In this processing, decoding and checking function of data frame sampled by MU can be completed, the sampling synchronization of MU can be finished, the FIFO sequencing, digital filtering, sampling and Ethernet framing function can also be accomplished.In this paper, according to MU function, MU is divided into backplane, opened into and out plug-in, data receiving and processing plug-in, synchronization and data output plug-in, the hardware design schemes are detailed designed. Simultaneously, the software of MU are carried out the detailed design, which are Manchester encoding and decoding, cyclic redundancy check CRC, FIFO module and so on. It also research in-depth the synchronization problem of merging unit, this method can good guarantee data synchronization. Experimental results show that the hardware and software of merging unit can better accomplish their respective functions, it also provided the realization of a viable method of merging unit to solve the same time multi-tasking, communication of information flow, high speed of merging unit.
