With the development of electrical power system to large power grids, extra-high voltage and wide-area transmission, and a range of voltage collapse accidents result of voltage instability, increasingly importance has been attached to the problem of voltage stability. The Voltage stability has a direct link with the reactive power, the inadequacy of reactive power make advance in voltage sag and even voltage collapse. The reactive power optimization compensation is one of efficient methods to solve it.Reactive power compensation is a multi-objective, multi-variable, multi-restrictions nonlinear hybrid programming problem. The main study subjects is how to choose the compensation position and determine the economic compensation capacity under meeting the equality and inequality constraints. Firstly, this paper outlines the current research status of reactive power compensation techniques at home and abroad, and the main task.Secondly, the essay states detailed description of the close connections between reactive power and voltage, shows many index algorithms of voltage stability to determine weak buses, through the different statics of voltage stability limit to raise different indices of compatibility. It also introduces the measures and mechanizations of reactive power compensation, with it’s compensation equipments. The merits and demerits of traditional optimization algorithms as well as intelligent algorithm are discussed.Then, this paper analyzes the load flow calculations of reactive power compensation, in-depth the Newton load flow calculation, and the singular value and eigenvalue analysis of the Jacobi matrix is proposed to apply to the analysis of weak buses. It lists some object function models for different requirements, then through the ‘bisection method’ to determine the best reactive power compensation capacity about the optimal reactive compensation.Lastly, simulation calculation becomes more convenient with the application of Matlab Software. In the simulation, the superiority and calculation accuracy, and the effectiveness of how to choose the compensation position and determine the economic compensation capacity are validated.
