ABSTRACTDue to the global energy crisis and reconfiguration of energy structure, more and more attention has been placed on the exploitation and utilization of lignite and other low-grade coal. China enjoys an abundant lignite reserve, which makes it an economical and viable approach to exploit and utilize lignite. However, the history of lignite application in China is rather short, there are a lot of lessons have been learned during the course of technology introduction, assimilation and development, therefore some valuable experiences need to be reviewed and summarized.This paper begins with a brief introduction of operation experiences derived from some large lignite boilers running in China, then provides an investigation into key problems arising from boiler operation.Comprehensive analysis is further performed to the retrofits and experiments conducted on #2 lignite boiler in YuanBaoShan Power Plant, from the aspects of coal quality analysis, cold/hot combustion commissioning, pulverizing system retrofit and multi-step combustion reconfiguration.On the basis of testing data, effects and some remaining problems after boiler retrofit are briefly explained as well.In the end, this paper reviews and summarizes the experiences derived from lignite boiler combustion retrofit, and offers some advice on due boiler engineering and operation.
