In the nineties of last century, both the amendment to STCW95 adopted by IMO and ISM Code are the most important things that affect the whole shipping industry, which stimulate the maritime education and training (MET) systems in the member states to be at international standards. The seafarers that serve both on national ships and on ships abroad are under the same requirements. Our country, one of Group (a) Members States of IMO council, is a big country in the shipping industry and better in the maritime education and training. But the seafarers' performance at work is not so good that foreign shipowners, especially in Europe, recruit less Chinese seafarers. On the other hand, the quality of seafarers influences the reputation, service standards and safe operation of a shipping company. Therefore, how to enhance maritime education and training and to improve the training system is worthy to be considered by both maritime colleges and shipping companies in ChinaIn broad sense, MET includes the systemic education in a college and on-the-job training in a company. It runs through a seafarer' whole career. This paper compares Chinese MET system with those abroad, especially the role of shipping companies in MET, identifies the weakness of seafarers' training in shipping companies, lists the basic contents of training both on shore and on board for marine officers, makes suggestions in the improvement of seafarers training and management, so as to enhance the abi1ity of compet ition for Chinese shipping companies in the world shipping. In this way, our nation will be strong in the shipping industry in the world.
