The phenomena of icing and melting are large related with our daily life. The numerical simulation of the two situations have been a hotspot in the filed of numerical heat transfer. In this paper, based on enthalpy method in fixed grids, a numerical simulation of melting process on airfoil and a numerical study of icing considering natural convection in a cavity is presented respectively. First, the dissertation introduces the principle of icing and the importance and actualities in researching icing and melting. Then, the main approaches to numerical simulate the phenomena are summarized. The sensible heat capacity method model and the enthalpy method model, which are the two primary mathematical models to study phase change heat transfer, were both detailed analyzed. The self-contained mathematical model for natural convection phase change heat transfer is established. The grid generation technique, difference scheme of convective and diffusive terms, pressure and velocity correction methods and arithmetic of nonlinear equations are determined. In numerical simulation of three different kind shape of ice melting process on airfoil, the natural convection term in governing equation is simplified. On numerical simulate the freezing of water in a cavity, the natural convection is studied. Besides, the effect of the density in the grids and the space of the calculating time are researched. The results obtained show a very good agreement between numerical and experimental results. Analysis shows that the effect of natural convection can not be neglected.
