With the development of high speed railway of our country, train's operating speed and transporting density are increasing. Traditional train operating methods by people are out of requirement. But automatic train operation (ATO) which makes great use of advance computer technology can get reasonable solutions by simulating the process of train running. The solutions can not only assure the safety of train and the comfort of passengers, but also increase train's speed and save energy. It's certain that ATO will replace man operation in the near future.In this paper, the principles of ATO are identified by the research on train drive optimization; the theory of predictive control is studied to find ATO solutions. The main contents of the thesis are as follows:(1) The transit rules of train state are summarized to make a foundation of selecting reasonable drive solutions. The structure and calculating methods of train's energy are analyzed. Two energy saving driving operations are discovered: decreasing the asymmetry of speed and increasing free running time.(2) Railway ramp and speed limit are classified. Principles on different kind of ramp and speed limit are brought forward. The tactics of maximum ability and on time are identified.(3) The predictive control methods are made use of finding train's state in near future. When used to avoiding over speed, finding enter speed, passing low speed limit point, it makes the solutions more reasonable and optimizing.(4) Design and realize a full functional ATO simulating system. The tactics of ATO are explained in detail. The result of is almost the same as train's timetable.The result simulating system proved the optimized train driving method, ATO tactics, and predictive control arithmetic in this thesis. The study makes a good foundation to future online ATO research and means great to realize full functional ATO in our country.
