Distribution network is a kind of electric power network which has the closest relationship with power customers. Its reliability affects directly many aspects of people's daily life. In recent years, many electric power corporations devote a lot to improving the quality and efficiency of distribution network management.Geography Information System (GIS), a geographical research technology, has been developed greatly since 1960s. It's a kind of comprehensive technology integrating knowledge of computer science, mapping and remote sensing, geography, environmental science, space science, information and management science. The study of GIS and its data-structure which is congruous with the situation of power system, especially distribution system, is very valuable and practical for improving the reliability of the power system and efficiency of power network management. At the present time, distribution topology analysis as the basic module of Distribution Management System (DMS) has been thought highly of. Moreover, the use of Power Analysis System (PAS) and the operation of distribution system also depend on the result of topology analysis. However, the topology algorithms aimed at the transmission system can not be applied to distribution system directly and the characteristics of distribution system should be taken into account to modify the existent topology algorithms.Furthermore, one hotspot problerft of distribution topology analysis is the formation of original topology. The solution to this problem has been developed from traditional hand-inputting mode to the phase of automatically generation based on the vector coordinate. In the first, this paper carries out an in-depth study to the topology function of GIS, analyzes the difference between GIS topology and electric power topology, and discusses the feasibility and process of generating original topology automatically when drawing the GIS map. Secondly, distribution system hds two outstanding characteristics, one is that distribution network is complex in structure but operates radially; the other is that the number and the category of devices of distribution are both large. Breadth-First-Search (BFS) algorithm based on GIS is adopted for the two characteristics of distribution system and the demand of PAS.
