Plenty of low power factor and fluctuant load in the industrial enterprises causethe generation of a large amount of var. On the other hand, with development of theelectric and electronic technology, large-power electric and electronic devices whichare non-linear and generate a large amount of harmonic during the running are widelyused in the industries. The two factors jointly deteriorate the quality of the electricgrid. Therefore, how to combine var compensation and harmonic suppression is oneof the important subjects in the future study of the var compensation technology.TSC is one of the most popular var compensation devices used to effectivelycompensate var. The traditional TSC can only compensate var, but not suppressharmonic. Therefore, starting from such difficult problems as the grouping of filtersand the calculation method of switch control for which no one had ever find propersolutions by substituting the traditional thyristor switched capacitor with the thyristorswitched filter, this paper principally makes an in-depth discussion of the thyristorswitched filter, a new type of TSC, from theoretic and experimental perspectives.In terms of hardware, three modules are designed in this paper, including theTSC controller based on LF2407A DSP chip, the peripheral circuit and the maincircuit (filter banks). Some useful methods in grouping of filters are also advanced.In terms of software, the data collection software, the calculation method ofswitch control and the trigger control software are discussed with focus on generalthought on the design of the calculation method of switch control;i.e. effectivelysuppressing harmonic as well as satisfying the need of var compensation.The results of software emulation and measurement of model machine haveindicated that the new type of TSC provides superior performance and they aredynamic var compensation devices with the function of harmonic suppression.
