The amount of anthracite coals occupies 15 percent of coal reserves in China. In the situation of energy crisis, how to utilize these resources better is one of the important research subjects in future. In W-shaped boiler the pulverized coal is concentrated, a flame is prolonged, and the refractory belts are laid down. These measures contribute to fuel ignition, flame stability and coal burn-out. The advantages in coal flexibility, burning stability at low loads and fly ash burn-out are further showed. Therefore W-shaped boilers are used extensively in our country.Experiences in practice show that there are also many problems during W-shaped boiler operation. The boiler efficiency is low because of high carbon content in fly ash. This isn't able to agree with W-shaped boiler original design intention. For dry anthracite coal with lower volatile content, the boilers still need oil for supporting combustion during operation at low loads. High temperature in furnace results in high NO_x emission and slag-bonding. So it is necessary to study W-shaped boiler characteristics.
