The Static var Generator (SVG) as an important component of the flexible ACtransmission system (FACTS), set electric and electronic technology, computertechnology and modem control technology in itself. Through the control of outputtingvoltage amplitude and phase of the SVG device, it can regulate continuously thereactive power in the whole range from capacitive reactive power to inductivereactive power, reach to compensate rapidly the demand for the reactive power of thesystem, thus can suppress the voltage fluctuating, improve power quality, strengthensystematic stability. This superior performance of SVG will let it become the nextmajor development direction for reactive power compensation equipment, and it willbe the representative of a new generation of reactive compensation devices.This paper introduces the development of reactive compensation devices and thedevelopment and present state of SVG at first. It analysis the operating principle ofSVG. Comparison with other reactive compensation devices, SVG has the advantagesof faster regulation speed, larger operating range, higher system stability. On thisfoundation, the paper establishes the mathematics model, and preparations for theexperiment platform. Furthermore, the main power circuit taking IGBT as key device,the control circuit based on digital signal processor TMS320F2812 and the controlsoftware based on C language have been designed. With the hardware circuit andcontrol software analyzed and designed above, the experimental SVG device has beendeveloped and been test. Various kinds of characteristic tests, which verify thefeasibility of this device, have been carried on. All this work lays the goodtechnological foundation in order to study SVG device.The author mastered the use of them and the technology of developing SVG after study and application of hardware and software programming. All of these offerthe experiment platform for further study.
