Utilization of biomass has become a key research area for scientific research communities and corporations. The main channels of its utilization are biomass fermentation, biomass gasification and biomass combustion. Biomass fermentation is on the slow progress for its technical bottlenecks, which have lower energy conversion efficiency and lignin degradation, higher temperature requirements in winter, and other problems. Although the energy conversion efficiency of biomass gasification improved, many places have prohibited the use of the technology for its enormous security risks, because the composition of the gasification main ingredient is CO, which is a colorless, tasteless and toxic gas. And biomass combustion becomes the main research direction for scientific research communities, due to its higher production efficiency, stronger adaptability and other advantages.In order to compare biomass direct combustion, biomass briquettes combustion and biomass bundles combustion, this paper provides design and study of a biomass bales combustion boiler. The study include the characteristic analysis of biomass bundles combustion, the development of biomass bundles combustion boiler, the thermal characteristics experiment of this boiler under 4 states, and the tech-economic evaluation of this boiler. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:1) Biomass bundles combustion overcome the inadequacy of original biomass and biomass briquettes combustion, and becomes an important development direction of biomass combustion technology. Biomass bales have many advantages, such as moderate density, low power consumption, high production efficiency and easy to use.2) By testing the thermodynamic performance of biomass bundles combustion boiler, it was found that the thermal efficiency is 73.13%, the combustion efficiency is 95.12%, the heating load is 35kW, and other kinds of thermal characteristic parameters reached design specification. 3) By testing the environmental performance of biomass bundles combustion boiler, it was found that the contents of fume and nocuous gas , such as NOx,CO and SO2, are low enough to meet the national standard.4) The manufacturing process of biomass bundles combustion boiler is simple. It is easy to operate, has shorter Tp, more NPV and B/C, higher IRR, and better economy than biomass briquettes combustion equipment with single fire grate. It has a certain market prospect.
