Demand pushes people to keep on researching. Gradually, the fast-changing market demand can not be satisfied by traditional instruction set computing technology. Now a new technology, the reconfiguration technology, can be compatible of both the processing speed of hardware and the flexibility of software. It attracts attention by its programmable logical devices. As an indispensable part of automobile electronics, vehicle GPS applying system plays an active role in traffic guiding, management and safety. However, with its updating and enlarging application the function of this system is also growing. Therefore, based on traditional instruction set computing technology, this GPS system needs redesigning and reproducing, which increase the researching cost and period.This paper will meet the need of vehicle GPS terminal system and make use of reconfigurable, upgrading, expandable vehicle GPS terminal model. First, we will introduce the background and development at home and abroad of reconfiguration technology and vehicle GPS terminal. Then, after researching and comparing present reconfigurable technology and vehicle GPS terminal, we design a vehicle GPS terminal model based on reconfiguration technology, and complete system emulation and PCB design through FPGA and other circuit module. Besides, in connection with the demand of the many used UARTs in the system, a "Bridge" method by the inner part RAM of FPGA has been set up, which realize the expandation of reconfigurable multi-UART by Verilog, the hardware description language. Finally, there is a summary of the deficiency and future expectation.As the function of this terminal system is comparably simple, and doesn't have a strict requirement of the CPU, this paper only provides a system design based on IP core of 8051. When higher CPU handling capacity or more other functions are required, downloading of FPGA program and expanding of connector will be applied, to finalize the reconfiguration of the whole terminal system.
