With the function of protection, control and supervision for the primary equipments in substation, the substation automation systems guarantee safety, stability and economical operation for the power system. Along with the rapid development of computer technology and communication network, the communication networks in the substation automation system receive much more attention nowadays. This paper focus on the establishment of the communication network in the substation automation system based on IEC 61850 and the simulation of the network performance. The main point is mentioned as follows:The developing process of the communication technology in substation automation system is summarized. The procedure that IEC 61850 is applied into the communication network in the substation automation system is analyzed, and the network architecture of per stage is discussed.The background of the enactment of IEC 61850-the serial international standard of communication networks and systems in substations is introduced. The content and the main characteristics of this standard are analyzed in detail. The relations and differences between IEC 61850 and other communication protocols used in power system are summarized. The seamless communication architecture of power system IEC 61850–based is proposed.The full double-duplex, switch technology and prioritization mechanism are studied to improve the real-time performance of Ethernet, and the shortage of the transmission time uncertainty in the traditional Ethernet is resolved. The industrial Ethernet is introduced. A typical 220kV substation is decomposed into several bays. The functions of the equipments in the line bay, the transformer bay and the substation level are analyzed. Then using the method of the object-oriented modeling, these functions are decomposed into the logical nodes defined in IEC 61850, and these logical nodes are reassembled to establish the IED with interoperability in the substation automation system. The load of the communication network in the substation automation system is analyzed and classified. Finally, according to the characteristics of each type of the load, the transmission modes as well as mechanisms are designed.In the end of this paper, the communication network in the typical 220kV substation automation system is constructed using the switch Ethernet technology. The real-time performances of the process-level Ethernet in the line bay and the transformer bay, the uniform Ethernet in whole substation are verified using OPNET network simulation analysis software. The simulation results demonstrate that the communication network constructed in this paper satisfied the requirements of the substation automation system communication.
