It is practical significance in developing the traditional famous flowertree-peony into cut flower with Chinese characteristic. Up to now, there are few reports about the senescence mechanism of tree-peony. 21 cultivars of cut flower of tree-peony were taken as material, and the ethylene production through the nature opening course and the vasing process, the effects of ethylene and its inhibitors STS, the variation of ACC content, the activity of ACS (ACC synthase) and ACO (ACC oxidase) during the nature florescence were analyzed to investigate ethylene production patterns and ethylene biosynthesis and function mechanism of tree-peony cut flowers. The main experimental results are as follows:(1) It is made certain the criterion of selecting the cultivars of tree-peony as cut flowers. The criterion include the vase life, the flower style, the degree of petaloid stamens or pistils in the center of the flower and so on. According to the results of the vasing experiment, some cultivars of tree-peony are recommended for future cut flower are growing.(2) The opening and senescence behavior and the senescence characteristic of the cut flowers during vasing process were investigated. The analysis showed that the changes of flower index, the senescence symptom and the flower diameter were quite different depending on the cultivars.(3)Upon the present results, the endogenous ethylene production of intact flowers of tree-peony cut flower could be divided into three groups, including like climacteric type, like nonclimacteric type and increase during later stage type.(4) The ethylene and ethylene action inhibitor STS treatment to different cut flower of tree-peony showed significant different behavior. Such as 'Luo Yang Hong' showed the effects of accelerating opening and lightly restraining the ethylene peak, but not shortening the cut flowers vase life. 'Tai Ping' belong to the like nunclimactic type, and the treatment of ethylene significantly accelerated its opening and shortened the vase life, as well asincreased accelerate the ethylene production. There was no significant effects on the flower opening, the vase life and the ethylene production by the treatment of STS, compared to the control. However, there is no apparently difference of the trend of ethylene productionduring the opening and senescence process for these two cultivars.(5) The endogenesis ethylene metabolize of 'Luo Yang Hong during natural florescence is like climactic type. ACC accumulated along with the opening process, and the ACC content peak appeared at the 4th stage. The ethylene production significant climbed up at the 5th stage. The activity of ACS constantly dropped during the tree-peony cut flower opening and senescence, but the activity of ACO showed fluctuation. It is speculated that the ACC accumulation is the main reason of the ethylene rise during the last stage of natural senescence in 'Luo Yang Hong. The pattern of ethylene in natural and vasing process of Chun Hong Jiao Yan are the same of like climactic type. During the vasing, the activity of ACO and the ethylene production are both the highest on the 4th stage compare with the other stages. This confirmed the type of ethylene production of 'Chun Hong Jiao Yan', Climactic type.
