HERBA HOUTTUYNIAE, the whole plant of Houttuynia cordata Thunb.,is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Houttuynia cordata Thunb. is the only species in Houttuynia Thunb. according to many Florae. A new species in H. Thunb. named as Honttuynia emeiensis Z.Y Zhu et S. L. Zhang was found at Emei Mountain in 2001, locally called commonly white Yuxingcao, was also used as vegetable and HERBA HOUTTUYNIAE at Emei and Leshan regions. In modern pharmacological terms, the volatile oil of H. cordata is regarded as the major bioactive compound possessing antibacterial, antivirial, antitumor, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet aggregation, immunomodulatory, antioxidative and antimutagenic effects, which containing decanoyl acetaldehyde, 2-undecanone, dodecanaldehyde, et al.. The steamdistillate of fresh H. cordata can inhibit herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), influenza virus, and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Now HERBA HOUTTUYNIAE has been selected as one of the candidate medicines for treating sever acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China, and preliminary experimental results indicate H. cordata extract kills SARS virus. And recently, it has demonstrated considerable efficacy in anti-SARS.H. cordata has plentiful germplasm resources all around the world. However, the volatile chemical constituent dynamical changing rules of H. cordata has not yet been studied in detail. According to our preliminary results based on the volatile chemical constituents and their contents from the aerial parts of 20 accessions from different regions, there are two different Houttuynia chemotypes. The present study seeks to learn more...
