Picea crassifolia kom. is a domestic species in westen China, and it is one of the most important indigenous tree species used for the production of pulp wood and timber. Most of natural stands were felled in history, some gene resources had been lost. In order to conserve the remainders scientifically and utilize rationally, it was necessary to make clear genetic diversity (GD) and population differentiation within the species. This study could provide the theoretical references and basic data for the gene resources conservation and genetic improvement in this species. This study selected and investigated 10 natural populations of picea crassifolia kom. in QiLian mountain, based on filed investigation and analysis of the anatomical structure of needles of picea crassifolia kom. . Eight needle traits in 20 trees from each of 10 population in picea crassifolia kom. were measured in order to opened out the phenotypic variation of natural populations and found out the relationship between phenotypic variation of natural population and different distribution areas in picea crassifolia kom. . The major conclusions were described as follows :(1) The variance analysis for all the anatomical structure of needles traits showed that there was significantly difference among populations and there was indistinctively difference among individuals within population.(2) The mean anatomical structure of needles differentiation coefficient (Vst) ranged from84.37%~98.72%, the mean Vst was 92.65%, it showed that the variation among populations 92.65%) was larger than that within population(7.35%).(3) The mean anatomical structure of needles differentiation coefficient ranged from0.0840-0.1932, the mean Vst was 0.1434.(4) The order of Coefficient of variation (CV) was as follows: Sunan1(0.1722) > Tianzhu1(0.1527) > Sunan 3(0.1524) > Tianzhu2(0.1470) > Minle(0.1462) > Sunan2(0.1377) > Datong1(0.1367) > Menyuan(0.1354) > Datong2(0.1304) > Shandan(0.1235). The tendency of the CV within populations was Sunan1.(5) The order of Coefficient of variation (CV) within population was as follows: WS(0.1575)﹥LS(0.1553)﹥WL(0.1493)﹥LL(0.1453)﹥CL(0.1389)﹥CW(0.1388) ﹥NL(0.1322)﹥NW(0.1300)。(6) The traits varitation of natural populations within picea crassifolia kom. affected mainly by annual precipitation in spatial distribution.(7) According to the UPGMA cluster analysis, the 10 populations of the picea crassifolia kom. could be divided into four groups.
