Part One The goal of the study was to investigate fasting plasma beta-endorphin (~3-EP) and neuropeptide Y (NIPY) levels and their relationship with fasting insulin levels, body mass index(BMI), waist to hip ratio (WI-IR) in patients with overweight and simple obesity, another goal was to evaluate the effects of an anti-obese agent, sibutramine on plasma f3-EP and NPY levels in these patients. 32 patients with overweight and simple obesity were assigned to sibutramine-treated group (n=l 6, group A), placebo-treated group (n~=1 6, group B) according to the rule of random and double-blind. 16 healthy subjects were as control group (group C). Before and after six months treatment, plasma 13-EP, NPY and serum insulin levels of patients in group A and group B were measured by radioimmunoassay (RJA).These parameters in group C were also measured . Results: (1) In basic states, fasting plasma ~3-EP , NPY, serum insulin levels, BMI and WHIR were higher in obese group than in control group (all P
